White Water Rafting - Lower Youghiogheny River - July 14, 2007

We set up a white water rafting trip for Saturday 7/14/07 and ended up with a large group - a total of 15 people. All but three in the group had NEVER been white water rafting - so we decided to brave the Class II and III rapids. We ended up with Wilderness Voyageurs as our tour company as we decided to take on the Lower Youghiogheny River in Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania.

We started off with an early morning wake-up call and a departure time of 6:15 from my house in Urbana, MD. After a few introductions and a stop at Giant for a few necessities such as coffee, food, and some much needed Imodium AD, we were on our way with 3 SUVs heading west! Please click on the IMODIUM link and wait for the bathroom door to open - is this a coincidence??? I think not!!! Too funny!!!

We took I-70 west to I-68 west all the way to the end of the great state of Maryland and then went north 20 miles into Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania. Much to the relief of our Imodium AD customer, we made only 1 stop on the 2.5 hour trip - we made a pit stop at a McDonalds in Cumberland, MD because others in the group requested a bathroom break.

Once we arrived at Wilderness Voyageurs, I checked in at the front desk while the rest of the people in our group changed into their rafting clothes. After a quick briefing from a guide on the dangers of white water rafting, we picked out our lifejackets and helmets. We then jumped into a school bus (not the SHORT version) for a quick ride to the staging area where we met our guides and split up into groups of 5 as follows:

Raft 1 (#668)
Cyntia, Luis, Silvia, Nelson, Noli, and Roger (our feerless guide)

Raft 2 (#609)
Carlos, Richie, Dad, Catia, Sandra, and guide

Raft 3 (#673)
Danny, Wanda, Isabel, Mr. Solomon, Kith, and guide

We carried our rafts into the river, jumped in, and talked about boat maneuvering and river safety. As they say, the rest is history and a picture is worth 1,000 words...
